Caption: Computer graphics representation of the crystallographically-determined, three-dimensional structure of a Foot & Mouth Disease virus, a member of the picornavirus family. Precise positions have been assigned to virtually all of the third of a million atoms that comprise the spherical coat (the viral capsid) that encloses and protects the genetic material (in form of RNA). False colours are used to distinguish the different proteins that make up the viral coat to emphasize their highly symmetrical arrangement. This simplified image shows the "backbones" of protein chains in the front of the capsid. Image shows only front half of capsid, viewed down the five-fold axis of symmetry. Capsid diameter:.
