Caption: AIDS. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a T-lymphocyte infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the causative agent of AIDS. An infected T-cell typically has a lumpy appearance with irregular rounded surface protrusions. The small spherical virus particles (coloured green) on the surface are in the process of budding away from the cell membrane. Depletion of the population of T4 lymphocytes through HIV infection is the main reason for the destruction of a person's immune system in AIDS. The T-cell shown here is from a culture cell line called H9. Magnification: x8000 at 6x7cm size, x3500 at 35mm size.
