False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) showing particles of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the cause of AIDS, budding from the plasma membrane of an infected T- lymphocyte. Virus particles (orange/green) in various stages of emergence are located between two T- cells. The first sign of an emerging virus is a bump in the cell membrane. This enlarges until only narrow strands of cytoplasm connect the virus with its host cell. Newly-released virus particles possess an outer shell of dense material that becomes reorganized to form the central nucleoid as the particles mature. Magnification: x13,500 at 6x7cm size, x6,000 at 35mm size.
