Caption: Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of virions (virus particles) of the German measles Rubella virus, erupting from the surface of an infected cell (at lower right). Rubella is a paramyxovirus. Once it infects a cell, the cell is programmed to reproduce more viruses which then leave through the cell membrane. German measles is spread in airborne droplets, occurring commonly in children as a mild rash. Rubella is a risk to pregnant mothers and adults with impaired immunity (such as leukaemia and AIDS patients). A rubella vaccine is routinely given to infants to provide immunity. Magnification: x6,860 at 6x7cm size.
