Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of clustered polio viruses. These viruses are the cause of polio-myelitis, a disease once known as infantile paralysis. The polio virus is a small RNA virus of the sub-group picornaviruses; it occurs as three antigenically distinct types, type 1 being the cause of most polio epidemics. Infection occurs through the mouth. Usually no more than a mild illness results; but in serious cases it attacks the nervous system, causing para- lysis or even death. Effective vaccines have all but eliminated polio from developed countries. Magnification: x96,000 at 6x7cm size.
