Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a group of five Herpes simplex viruses. The capsid or protein coat of each virus is seen; it consists of 162 capsomers (protein units that resemble dots) in an icosahedral shape. Herpes simplex is a DNA virus, occurring in two forms: type 1 and 2. These types are visually identical, but are biochemically different. Herpes simplex is a human parasite, causing a variety of infections including whitlows and cold sores of the mouth and genitalia. Genital herpes is sexually transmitted, and is associated with cervical cancers in women. Magnification: x28,500 at 6x7cm size.
