Caption: AIDS virus. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Human Immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) on the surface of a T-lymphocyte blood cell. The spherical viruses are coloured pink; the uneven T- cell surface is coloured yellow. HIV viruses are believed to cause AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). HIV infects the T-cell, a cell involved in the body's immune response, and instructs the cell to produce more HIV viruses. By this process of infection the T-cell is killed. Depletion of T- cells in the blood results in the destruction of a person's immune system in the disease of AIDS. Magnification: x35,000 at 5x7cm size.
