Caption: HIV viruses budding from T-cell. Coloured Trans- mission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) near the surface of a T- lymphocyte white blood cell. Many HIV viruses are seen (green). At lower frame (brown, yellow) is the granular cytoplasm of a T-cell, from which some HIV viruses are budding. HIV viruses are believed to cause AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) by infecting T-cells, the cells involved in the body's immune response. HIV instructs the cell to reproduce more viruses, & by this process of making and budding off new viruses, T-cell's are killed. The human immune system is thus des- troyed. Magnification: x50,000 at 35mm size.
