Caption: HIV viruses. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a section through a number of Human Immunodeficiency Viruses (HIV), the cause of AIDS. Six rounded viruses are seen. The spiked outer protein coat (white) surrounds a core of RNA genetic material (red). The HIV virus is transmitted in body fluids, notably blood, semen and vaginal fluid. The virus attacks T-lymphocyte white blood cells of the immune system, weakening the body's ability to fight infection. A person who develops AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) may suffer weight loss and fever, before dying from normally non-life threatening diseases. Magnification: x65,000 at 6x7cm size.
