Caption: Herpes simplex viruses. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a section through herpes simplex virus particles. A core of red genetic material is seen enclosed within an outer protein coat. The viruses are at the surface of an infected cell (light yellow, top right). Herpes simplex exists in two general forms: type I is associated with oral cold sore infections, and type II with genital herpes infections. Herpes simplex is one of the most common viral parasites in humans. They cause small, fluid-filled blisters which, if touched, can spread the virus. The blisters occur on the mouth or genitalia. Magnification: x120,000 at 6x7cm size.
