The cell (brown, bottom right) has been infected by several viruses. Herpes viruses reproduce by binding to the wall of a host cell and injecting their own DNA into it. The viral DNA hijacks the cell, turning it into a virus-making machine. Herpes viruses commonly cause human diseases such as chickenpox, glandular fever, cold sores, and shingles.
