Caption: Rabies infected cell. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a section through an animal cell infected with rabies virus particles. The viruses are seen as red cores of RNA-genetic material encased in a blue-green protein capsule. The animal cell organelles are varying shades of brown with the cell's nucleus at top left. Rabies virus is a member of the Rhabdovirus family. The virus is usually transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected dog or other animal. Symptoms appear after an incubation period ranging from 10 days to 1 year & include fever, muscle spasm, & hydrophobia. Death occurs within 4-5 days. Magnification: x30,000 at 6x7 cm size.
