Caption: Wart virus. Coloured transmission electron micro- graph (TEM) of human papilloma viruses (HPV), the cause of human warts or papillomas. These DNA viruses have a cubic-symmetry although they appear rounded here. Their protein coat contains 72 capsomer units which resemble bumps. HPV causes warts on the hands and soles of the feet, on mucous membranes of the body and on the genitals. Human papilloma viruses belong to the papovavirus group of which most members are capable of inducing non-malignant tumours. HPV virus has been implicated in certain skin and cervical cancers.
