Caption: Hantavirus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through some Hantaviruses (Hantaan virus). This type of Bunyavirus causes Haemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS). The rounded viruses' have RNA (ribonucleic acid) genetic material held inside a protein coat (blue) and are covered in surface proteins (green). Humans obtain the virus by inhaling or ingesting secretions or excreta from infected rodents. The severe symptoms are fever, kidney pain, nausea, haemorrhage and shock. The virus causes blood leakage from blood vessels into the tissues. If renal failure and jaundice occur renal dialysis is vital. Magnification unknown.
