Caption: Herpesvirus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a cell infected with herpesviruses. The herpesviruses are the blue dots along the outer edge of the cell (orange and red). The DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) of the herpesviruses is inside an icosahedral (20-sided) protein coat, which is itself enclosed by a membrane or envelope studded with viral glycoproteins. These surface proteins help the virus attach to target host cells. Human diseases caused by herpesviruses include chickenpox and shingles, due to varicella-zoster, and herpes, due to herpes simplex. Magnification unknown.
