Caption: Measles virus. Computer artwork of the measles virus (rubeola), a member of the paramyxovirus (morbillivirus) group. The virus' lipoprotein envelope (transparent) has glycoproteins (orange) on its surface that enable the virus to attach to its host cell. The envelope encloses the nucleocapsid: a helical structure consisting of a single strand of RNA (ribonucleic acid, purple and blue) surrounded by a protein coat, or capsid. Measles is highly infectious and mainly affects children, producing fever and a rash. One attack usually gives life-long immunity.
