Caption: Ebola virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a number of Ebola viruses. They are the cause of Ebola fever. Elongated in shape, they are members of the filovirus group of viruses. A number of major outbreaks of Ebola infections have occurred in equatorial Africa since 1976, causing severe and frequently fatal symptoms. These include high fever, haemorrhaging and central nervous system damage. There is no absolute cure for the disease, but with excellent supportive therapy, around three- quarters of victims recover. In rural Africa, however, the survival rate may be lower than 10%. Magnification: x12,500 at 6x7cm size.
