Caption: Herpes simplex viruses. Coloured transmission ele- ctron micrograph (TEM) of a section through herpes simplex virus particles. The viruses are round, with their core of DNA genetic material seen in orange. They are among the contents of an infected cell. Herpes simplex exists in two general forms: type I is associated with oral cold sores, while type II causes genital herpes. Herpes simplex is one of the most common viral parasites in humans. They cause small, fluid-filled blisters which, if touched, can spread the virus. The blisters occur on the mouth or genitalia and may persist for weeks. Antiviral drugs may be helpful.
