Caption: West Nile viruses. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a group of West Nile viruses (WNV). This virus is known to cause encephalitis in humans. WNV belong to the group of Flaviviruses and are RNA viruses with cubic symmetry. Here the outer protein coat (capsid) of each virus is red. West Nile virus is transmitted by mosquitoes and is known to infect both humans and animals (such as birds). In August 1999 an outbreak of encepha- litis caused by West Nile virus occurred in New York City and neighbouring counties, USA. A mosquito-control campaign successfully controlled this spread of WNV. Magnification: unknown.
