This virus belongs to the flavivirus group and contains RNA (ribonucleic acid) genetic material. It is endemic in tropical Africa and Central and South America, and is transmitted to humans by infected female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes when they bite. Yellow fever causes yellowing of the skin due to jaundice, as well as fever, headache and nausea. In serious cases there may be liver and kidney damage, or even death.
