Caption: Papillomaviruses. Computer artwork (left) and coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of human papillomavirus (HPV) particles (virions). Their protein coats, or capsids (red) enclose their genetic material (not seen). Each capsid is studded with surface proteins (blue). HPV causes warts, which commonly grow on the hands, the soles of the feet, the body's mucous membranes and the genitals. It has also been linked with some skin and cervical cancers. It belongs to the papovavirus group, most of whose members are capable of inducing non-malignant tumours. Magnification unknown.
