Caption: Dengue fever virus replication. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of dengue fever virus virions (blue) replicating in a cell. The many particles are forming in spaces in the cell cytoplasm near to the nucleus (green, upper right), by a process known as condensation. They will then leave the cell. Dengue is transmitted by mosquitoes, replicating chiefly in the immune system's macrophage cells. It causes fever, headache and joint pain, often with a rash. Severe cases result in haemorrhages and hypovolaemia, a dangerously low level of circulating blood. Magnification: x16,500 at 6x7cm size.
