Caption: HIV viruses. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) particles. These particles are docking at a T-lymphocyte (white blood cell) just before infection. HIV infects cells that are crucial to the immune system. It instructs them to produce more viruses which bud off from the cell. Ultimately the cell is killed. With fewer T- lymphocytes, the patient becomes vulnerable to formerly harmless infections. This condition is known as AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). Magnification unknown.
