Caption: Mumps virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a mumps virus in a capsule. The long, thin chains (red) contain ribonucleic acid (RNA) genetic material. They are seen in a capsule (pink). The mumps virus is a paramyxovirus. The infection usually causes swelling of the parotid glands of the neck. It is a common childhood disease, and symptoms normally subside within three days. Magnification unknown.
