Caption: Foot and mouth disease virus life cycle, artwork. The foot and mouth disease virus (Aphthovirus) consists of a single RNA (ribonucleic acid) strand in an icosahedral capsid. A few virus capsids land on a cell membrane (upper right) and insert their RNA (yellow) into the cell. The RNA is a genetic code for protein manufacture. Cellular ribosomes (pink, centre right) read the viral RNA and make viral proteins. A cascade of further biochemical reactions leads to new viral RNA and capsids being made (lower right). Finally, the cell is destroyed and new virus capsids (upper left) flood out. This highly contagious virus causes fever and blisters in cloven-hoofed animals, such as cows and sheep.
