Caption: Ross river virus life cycle, artwork. This virus (Alphavirus) consists of a single stand of RNA (ribonucleic acid) in a protein core enveloped in a lipid membrane. Here, a virus particle (virion) is engulfed by a cell membrane (centre right). The protein core (orange) is released, and it releases its cargo of viral RNA (yellow, lower right). The RNA is a genetic code for making proteins. Cell ribosomes (pink, lower left) read this RNA, making new viral RNA and core & surface (blue) proteins. These assemble and wrap themselves in lipid (cell) membrane (upper left) and a new virion buds from the surface. This virus is spread by mosquitoes, causing fever and joint pain in mammals.
