Caption: Ebola virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of an Ebola virus particle, the cause of Ebola fever in humans. It takes its name from the location of the first recorded outbreak near the Ebola river, Democratic Republic of Congo. Ebola can be contracted by handling material from infected animals or through contact with bodily fluids of infected patients. Symptoms include high fever, haemorrhaging and central nervous system damage. There is no cure, but most victims recover if given excellent supportive therapy. Magnification: x18,000 at 6x7cm size.
