Caption: Cytomegalovirus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a sectioned virus particle of the cytomegalovirus. The central nucleocapsid area (white/orange) contains the viral DNA genetic code by which the virus replicates. An outer envelope (green) circles the nucleocapsid. Cytomegalovirus (CMV), a member of the herpesvirus group, causes infected cells to enlarge, hence the name of the virus. Infection is very common and not dangerous, but serious infections can occur in people with a lowered immunity, such as the elderly and those with AIDS. The virus can harm unborn children who are infected through their mothers. Magnification: x126,000 at 6x7cm size.
