Caption: Pig retrovirus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of porcine endogenous retrovirus (PERV) in infected tissue. The retrovirus is the orange/red/blue structure at centre. PERV, like other retroviruses, integrates into the genome of the host organism, which means that it can be inherited. It lies dormant until certain conditions activate it. PERV can infect human tissues and is considered a risk after the transplantation of pig tissue to human patients (such as kidney cells or pancreas cells).
