Virus, computer artwork. Viruses contain a core of genetic material, either DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) or RNA (ribonucleic acid). This is surrounded by a protein coat (capsid) and sometimes an outer lipid envelope, which derives from the host cell membrane. The lumps on the surface are protein spikes, used for recognising and binding to the host cell.
