Caption: The 10 GeV proton synchrotron at the Dubna Labor- atory, Moscow. Called the Synchrophasotron by the Soviets, it started operations in 1957, & was for two years the world's highest energy accelerator. It weighed 36, 000 tonnes, & was the largest accelerator ever built with so-called "weak focussing" magnets. (It was superseded in 1959 by CERN's Proton Synchrotron or PS, the first of the strongly focussing synchrotrons).
