Caption: Coxsackie virus particles, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Coxsackie viruses were named after the town in the USA where they were isolated. They are enteroviruses, part of the Picornaviridae group. This group contains small, non-enveloped, icosahedral-shaped viruses (red). Coxsackie viruses, of which there are many types, cause diseases such as aseptic meningitis; herpangina, an acute pharyngitis; hand, foot and mouth disease (not foot and mouth); epidemic myalgia or Bornholm disease; and myocarditis. They are also among the miscellaneous viruses that cause colds. Magnification: x151,000 when printed 10 centimetres high.
