The capsid encloses the virus's genetic information (genome), stored as RNA (ribonucleic acid). West Nile virus (Flavivirus sp.) is transmitted by mosquitoes. Mild illness with flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, back pain and muscle aches, is known as West Nile fever. More severe forms of the disease are called West Nile encephalitis or West Nile meningitis and can cause confusion, and near-coma loss of consciousness.
