Caption: Norwalk virus particle. Computer artwork of the capsid of the Norwalk virus (Norovirus sp.). The capsid is a protein coat which encloses the virus's genetic information (genome), stored as RNA (ribonucleic acid). Noroviruses are highly contagious and are transmitted via faecally contaminated food and water, and by person-to-person contact. They cause vomiting and diarrhoea, and are a major cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide, often causing explosive outbreaks in institutions.
