Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a field of influenza virus particles (virions). The influenza virus is a member of the myxovirus group & contains a RNA core surrounded by a helical protein capsid (the nucleocapsid). The protein capsid (dark green) becomes enveloped by lipoproteins derived from the host cell's membrane. Projections or "spikes" are formed on the surface of the envelope (see top centre). The influenza virus affects the respiratory system, symptoms commencing after an incubation period of 4 days. Symptoms are fever, headaches, & general weakness; secondary lung infections may be a complication. Magnification: x44,000 at 35mm size.
