Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of 2 virions (virus particles) of the influenza virus. Individual virions appear spherical (80-120nm diameter): a helical protein capsid surrounds the inner RNA containing nucleoid. The capsid is itself surrounded by a lipo- & glycoprotein membrane (appears green). Glycoproteins form the spiny projections on the outer surface of the envelope. The membrane is acquired by the virus as it buds from the cytomplasmic membrane of the host cell after replication has occurred, & facilitates re-entry into new host cells. Magnification: X 100,000 at 35mm size.
