Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a row of virions (virus particles) of the influenza virus, budding from the surface of an infected cell. The influenza virus belongs to the orthomyxovirus class of RNA viruses (the influenza viruses group), which possess an affinity for mucous. Spikes projecting from the envelope surrounding the viruses are used as a means of attachment to the mucoprotein receptors on surface of host cells comprising the resiratory epithelia. Influenza is usually short-lived & generally not serious, although virus-induced pneumonia or secondary bacterial infection may prove fatal. Mag: x30,000 at 35mm, x60,000 at 6x7cm size.
