Caption: False colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a single influenza virus. The influenza virus belongs to the orthomyxovirus class of RNA viruses (the influenza viruses group), which possess an affinity for mucous, hence their target is the respiratory epithelium. Spikes projecting from the envelope surrounding the virus are used as a means of attachment to the mucoprotein receptors on the surface of host cells. Influenza is typically short-lived and not generally serious, although virus-induced pneumonia or secondary bacterial infection may prove fatal. Magnification: x200,000 at 35mm size, 400,000 at 6x7 size.
