Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph of an influenza or flu virus (WSN strain). The roughly spherical particles measure 100 nanometres in diameter and contain glycoprotein spikes on their surfaces. The influenza viruses belong in a group known as the orthomyxoviruses. They cause an acute febrile illness and are of world-wide distribution. These viruses were grown in the laboratory from a specimen obtained from a human patient. Magnification: x14,100 at 35mm size. purple, blue and yellow version.
