Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of influenza viruses (blue and red), the cause of the "Hong Kong flu". The influenza virus belongs to the orthomyxovirus class of RNA viruses, all of which possess an affinity for mucus. The viruses are surrounded by an envelope which is used as a mean of attachment to the mucoprotein receptors on the surface of host cells of the respiratory epithelium. Influenza is usually short-lived and generally not serious, although virus-induced pneumonia or secondary bacterial infection may prove fatal. Magnification: x48,000 at 35mm size, x116,600 at 6x9cm size.
