Influenza virus life cycle, artwork. The flu virus (Orthomyxovirus) carries RNA (ribonucleic acid) wrapped in proteins & a membrane. A virus particle passes through a cell membrane (upper right) to be broken down by an endosome (yellow, centre right). Viral RNA (green) travels to the nucleus (brown, lower right). The cell reads the RNA instructions and the cell's protein factories (ribosomes, blue, in a coil at centre) make new viral materials. The cell's endoplasmic reticulum (bottom centre) is a major site of protein manufacture. A new viral RNA core (green, centre left) is enveloped by matrix proteins (pink), cell membrane and surface protein (red). New virus particles break off (upper left).
