Caption: Influenza virus particles, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). These virus particles have been sectioned to show an inner core (yellow) that contains the genetic material. The outer coat (red) consists of proteins by which the virus attaches to its host cell. Influenza belongs to the orthomyxovirus group of viruses. Influenza is an infection of the respiratory tract. It causes fever, aching muscles, a sore throat and weakness. New strains of the virus develop rapidly, and can cause epidemics. Magnification: x40,000 when printed 10cm wide.
