Caption: Hepatitis A virus. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a cluster of Hepatitis A virus particles, the cause of infectious hepatitis. Viruses particles are small red circles made of a protein coat encapsulating RNA-genetic material. These viruses are similar in structure to the Picornavirus group (which includes enterovirus and rhinovirus). During Hepatitis A infection, the virus attacks the liver producing liver inflamma- tion, fever and jaundice. Hepatitis A is transmitted by water or food contaminated with infected faeces. The disease is more prevalent in warm countries with poor standards of hygiene. Magnification: 56,000 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: 187,000 at 8x10' size.
