Caption: Cocksfoot mottle virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of virus particles (virions) of the cocksfoot mottle virus (CoMV). This plant virus is a sobemovirus, and has an RNA (ribonucleic acid) genome. It was first identified in 1963 in cocksfoot grass (Dactylis glomerata), a species of grass grown as a forage crop and as hay, to feed livestock. This virus also infects wheat plants. Symptoms are streaking and mottling of the leaves. The virus is transmitted by several species of Chrysomelid beetles. It is found in Western Europe, Japan and New Zealand. Magnification: x125,000 when printed 10cm high.
