Caption: Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), computer model. This image was created using molecular modelling software and data from X-ray crystallography. The images shows the outer protein shell, known as the capsid, coloured by protein subgroup. CMV is transmitted by aphids and infects a wide number of crop plants, causing stunted growth, wilting, mottling and poor fruit yield. X-ray crystallography fires powerful X-rays at crystals which produce a scattered pattern caught on a detector or photographic film. The pattern reveals the molecular structure of the specimen.
