Caption: T-bacteriophages on E. coli. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of two T-bacteriophage viruses attacking a bacterial cell of Escherichia coli. Each virus has a protein head (orange) containing DNA genetic material (red) and a green contractile tail with yellow tail fibres. These viruses are attached to an E.coli cell (blue) and are using their tails as syringes to inject their viral DNA into the cell. The red DNA is seen emptying from the top of the head. Once within the cell, the virus DNA will take over, effectively turning the bacterium into a virus-making machine. T-bacteriophages are parasites of E.coli bacteria. Magnification: x90,000 at 5x7cm size.
