Caption: Banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis). As the tree grows on a host plant its branches descend to the ground and act as roots. Eventually the host tree is strangled by the banyan. The trees may eventually cover an area of 1000 feet in diamaeter. Photgraphed in Madagascar.
