Adolescent affected by acne vulgaris. Acne vulgaris is a chronic skin disorder in which hair follicles become obstructed by sebum, the substance secreted by the sebaceous glands in the skin. The hair follicles become inflamed and spots develop. Sebum secretion increases with the onset of puberty and most adolescents have some acne. There is no instant cure for acne but many treatments are available to relieve it. Various topical applications are available and if they fail long-term therapy with oral antibiotics may be used. The spots should not be squezeed because it only worsens the condition and may lead to scarring.
