Caption: Light micrograph showing lung tissue of a person affected by coal workers' pneumoconiosis, also known as anthracosis. Black, coal particles are seen here with a particular dense region at centre. Inhaled coal dust cannot be removed or destroyed and due to its accumulation the lungs are less efficient in supplying oxygen to the blood. Other common forms of pneumoconiosis are silicosis (caused by silica dust) and asbestosis (due to asbetos fibres). Symptoms include shortness of breath and complications may be the development of emphysema and an increased risk of lung cancer. There is no treatment for pneumoconiosis. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size.
