Caption: Male pattern baldness. This adult male has thinned hair over his crown and temples, most marked immediately behind the fringe hairline (at centre). Male pattern baldness (hereditary alopecia) is the most common form of hair loss. The normal hair is replaced by fine, downy hair and the affected area gradually widens as the line of normal hair recedes. The pattern of hair loss is inherited; it usually affects men although young women and women who have passed the menopause are occasionally affected. There is no effective treatment for the condition. In certain cases, wigs and transplants may be considered.
